Villa Park: The Hidden Jewel

Our morning began with an inspirational invocation by Chanda Parret,  the Pledge of Allegiance by Brad Reese and "America the Beautiful" led by songbird Teri Brooks.

Teri Brooks- worked at the Orange County Fair collecting books- she asks that we get more members out to work at next year's fair.

Webmaster update: our award winning site is beginning to get inquiries from potential members who have contacted me through the website requesting additional information and today's guest Sarah McJunkin came to today's meeting after I invited her through the website.

            Ron and Deb celebrated with stays at the Ballard Inn in Los Altos, the Tickled PInk Inn in Carmel where they attended a Bach Festival( J.S. not Barbara) and the Fairmont Hotel, where they attended a  wedding- actually held at the Ruby Hills Golf Course in Pleasanton.  Lots of eating and wine tasting were reported.

John and Jean Broussard celebrated their anniversary with a trip to Las Vegas.

Happy Bucks:

Jeannie Hankins reported on the play at Mission Viejo High School where our own Eric Sense played Coach Buzz Nutter. A pleasant time was had by all who attended

Jeannie also says we're are now a 100% Paul Harris Club as of August 4, 2009

We should have a ceremony and banner before Oktoberfest- Everyone should wear their Paul Harris Pin to the upcoming Oktoberfest.

George Poulos welcomed Nagi Ibraham who is going to rejoin our club

Teri Brooks attended her 40th High School Reunion from Grant HIgh School in the Valley

Tom Davis thanked Ken Fischer for helping him with a project in his new office wood shop

Bob Meyer will be interviewed by a newspaper from Amsterdam about his days as a glider pilot during World War Two.  The interviewed will fly here to interview him and then accompany him back to Amsterdam where he will speak about his experiences.

He also reported that Ken's wife Angel returned from her tour in Iraq on August 4th.

Steven Pollack congratulated Steve and Lainey Stern on their 45th Wedding Anniversary

Eric Sense thanked Milt Stamos's son John for the work he did on the play and reported that they made $4000.00 that will be used as  a scholarship at Chapman University.

Jill Kuli was happy to see Sarah McJunkin at our meeting- Sarah contacted us through our website and is here to see if she wants to become a new member.

Brian Nash- told us to keep an eye on the Register for an article on the "Camp to Belong" that came out last Friday.  He again thanked everyone who helped with the camp.

Joe Brand- told a "Whopper"  and pointed out the article in this week's Orange City News by Teri Brooks about our efforts to collect DVD's for the troops in Afghanistan.

Jill Kuli said she is going to be collecting clothing for Working Wardrobes-contact Jill if you have donations. Bob Bob made a generous donation.

Jane McDonald took a 17 year old girl from Santa Ana shopping for clothing for college and related the experience to the group- this is part of a project from the Homework House and is championed by Judge Jack Mandel. Speak with Jane if you want to help.

Bill Baker - noted his dad is home after a long series of medical problems and that he took his family camping in the mountains.

Brian Kalchman- N2 Magazine

Brian came to tell us about the new Villa Park Magazine - Villa Park: The Hidden Jewel.

The first issue should be sent out free of charge to all Villa Park residents. The magazine will serve to:  Educate the residents about issues that concern them, announce upcoming events, keep everyone up to date on activities in the city, give meeting summaries, inform citizens of the by-laws and regulations, build home values and create a communication link between the neighborhoods, city and school district.  Many of the articles will be written by Villa Park residents and there will never be more than 50% advertising in each issue.

The magazine committee boasts several of our own rotarians- Teri Brooks, Linda Bartrom and Mark Schmidt and some of our members who will contribute articles to the magazine includes:  Steve Stern and Lesslie Giacobbi - plus other VP residents.

There will be a classified ads section that is free and there is enough advertising revenue to cover the cost of the first year's issues. 

If you wish to contribute to the magazine the deadline for submissions will be the 3rd of every month.
