Happy New Year !!
Good morning everyone, holiday greetings for the rest of the season. Today's meeting was started with an invocation by Ron Accornero who gave a spirited thought for the day and suggested we all go home and hug our loved ones and tell them how special they are to us. Joe Brand not only led the Pledge of Allegiance, but gave us some history as to its origins; it was first penned by Francis Belamy, a Baptist Minister in August of 1892 and later modified in 1923 by the Daughters of the American Revolution and took its current form in 1954 when Congress added the words "under God". Finally, we finished our opening exercises with Teri Brooks leading us in a spirited version of "Jingle Bells". Remember this is our last meeting of 2009 as we will be dark on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

Speaker: Dr. William Langstaff
Topic: Sleep Apnea
Dr. Langstaff has been practicing Dentistry in Villa Park since 1975. He has become very involved in the field of Sleep Dentistry in the last few years. He informed us that obstructive sleep apnea is a silent killer and that in 2004 medical experts decided that Dental Oral Appliances are the first line of treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea. Snoring is a precursor of sleep apnea, but not all people who snore have sleep apnea. The study of choice to determine if someone has sleep apnea is a Polysomnograph, however there are other studies that can be done at home, including the Watch-PAT 100 test which is worn by the patient while asleep and records data about their sleep hygeine. Dr Langstaff was quick to point out that Dentists do not make the diagnosis, but act to assist the physicians in caring for the patients. The gold standard is CPAP ( continuous positive air pressure)device delivered by a number different devices that work by forcing air down into the lungs. Unfortunately, only 40% of patients stick with it by years end. This is where the variety of dental
appliances that help to open the airway come in, not felt to be as good as CPAP, but effective enough to make a significant difference. The devices preferred by Dr. Langstaff not only open the airway by moving the jaw forward, but also hold the tongue down and prevent it from occluding the airway. Thanks to Dr. Langstaff for an informative and interesting discussion its amazing to see how prevalent this condition is in both adults and children.
