Speaker: Teri Brooks
Teri who has been associated with Villa Park TV for 18 years talked to us about the recent developments regarding the city and the TV station. The station which is run by volunteers and students from Villa Park High School is going to be taken over by the city and run by another group that the city has contracted with. The problem is that the station, which is a 501c3 non-profit, will have to turn its assets and monies over to another 501c3 in the city by virtue of its bylaws and the city is challenging this, threatening to fire the board and appoint other board members. Bill Bakerand Wayne Silzel who were founding members of VP TV along with Pete Moriarty, who has experience with dissolving 501c3s, made comments to the effect that the city is acting inappropriately in this manner. Teri has contacted the CA State Attorney General's Office for final authority in the issue and her take is that the bylaws will prohibit the city from taking the assets from the station. City Council member Brad Reese gave a brief view of the issue from the city council's point of view and seemed sympathetic to the issues at hand, but took a non-commital stance. If the assets from VP TV come to the club we would get all of the equipment and about $46,000 in cash. Teri estimates it will be mid-spring before the issue is resolved. This was a very interesting presentation, but it seems the city is bound and determined to take over the running of the station. We'll just have to see how this plays out over the next several months.
