
Rotary Club of Villa Park Newsletter
There was music in the air as our club held it's Annual Singing Competition. We opened with some words of wisdom from Albert Einstein, Confucius and Mohamed Ali delivered by Steve Kawa. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Mark Schmidt and Teri Brooks led us in a rousing version of " When the Saints Go Marching In".

Steve Stern announced that there will be a Fireside Chat at his home on February 17th from 6:30 to 8:30- a barbecue dinner will be served- all new members and current board members are invited to attend. Everyone is welcome. An RSVP was sent around, if you missed the meeting please RSVP to Steve Stern
Jill Kuli - Camp RYLA applications are available please contact her. The camp is for high school juniors.
Lisa Stepanski announced that an upcoming Eagle Scout Project will be a monument to all military Veterans in Villa Park. If you are a veteran or know one please contact Lisa at Lisa@LSBLawyers.com
Joe Brand reported that the Club had a successful Past President's Luncheon yesterday at Rockwell's. There was much give and take and everyone thought the outcome was positive and will help to reenergize the club.
Happy Bucks:
Bill & Paige Baker- just returned from a trip to Argentina where they attended a wedding a saw the sights. Bill got to experience the emergency medical system there and survived to tell the story.
Bob Kreisberg was happy to point out the recent article in Time Magazine about the Shelterbox program and Rotary. Jay Applebaum added that Rotary District 5320 has purchased about 50 boxes for the disaster in Haiti so far and our club has donated $2000 to the Rotary Foundation for use in Haiti.
Joe Brand announced that his grandson was diagnosed with a brain tumor fortunately it was benign and was successfully removed on Monday.
Bob Meyer announced that he had successful bladder cancer surgery and during the surgery it was determined that he had an irregular heart beat. He is now the proud owner of a new pacemaker and is doing fine. He encouraged everyone to make sure they have their Electrocardiagrams(EKG) interpreted by a Cardiologist.
John & Jean Broussard just returned from a 15 day trip to Hawaii.
He also reminded Pam Dunn, Millie Alexander and Mark Schmidt that they had signed up to do the Ronald McDonald House Dinner next Wednesday.
Eddie Nash attended a meeting sponsored by the County of Orange with all the non-profit faith based groups entitled, Faith in Motion. The group will focus on helping foster children in Orange County.
Lesslie Giacobbi has her 97 year old mom visiting from New York and is thouroughly enjoying the visit.
Steve Kawa announced that classes began at Santiago Canyon College and despite the delay in opening the new science building all the classes were accommodated.
Pam Dunn just returned from Guatemala with her daughter Maggie. She toured the country and enjoyed Lake Atitlan. She was impressed to see that 3 other club members had been to Guatemala.
Eric Sense was cajoled into telling us about his trip to last week's Superbowl Game. He and his group of friends were able to get into the game and had a wonderful time. He came back a Saints fan.
Correction from last week's newsletter: Milt Stamos wanted me to know that he attended Tulane University and Pete Moriarty attended LSU. Milt particularly wanted to emphasize the academic superiority of Tulane.
Birthdays and Anniversaries:
Fran Kreisberg celebrated her birthday with a dinner at Arnone's.
Craig Beinlich is celebrating his 21st anniversary today. We'll have to wait till next week to learn about the celebration.
Singing Competition Results
This year's competition boasted six very talented students from Villa Park High School.
Linda Bartrom-Olsen did a masterful job of organizing and mcing the event.
Our winners were:
Caroline Adnams- 1st Place -
Forrest Orta- 2nd Place
Clay Scarborough- 3rd Place
Sarah Vannoy- Honorable Mention.
The winners will go on to the District Competition.
