Rotary Awards Breakfast 2010
Today's Meeting opened with an invocation by Jill Kuli who reminded us of the Rotary Motto of "Service Above Self" and the Rotary Four Way Test. Bob Kreisberg led the Pledge of Allegiance and Joe Brand did double duty leading us in the Rotary Four Way Test and his favorite song, Zipity Do Dah. We had a large crowd who came for the Annual Awards Breakfast.
We then began our Awards Ceremony:
Recognition Awards Organizer LInda Bartrom-Olsen introduced our first category:
Teacher of the Year- Coordinated and Presented by Anita Jameson
1st Place: Karen Millett of Cerro Villa Middle School- $300 and Certificate
2nd Place: Sharon Houlihan, VP Elementary- $100 and Certificate
Stacy Castiglione, Villa Park High-$100 and Certificate
Anita did a wonderful job, reading comments from students and colleagues of each recipient.
Second Category: "Four Way Test" Essay Recipients
Presented by Contest Coordinators Lesslie Giacobbi and Bryan Nash
Winners: Sarah Martinez $50 and Certificate
Josh Ruiz- $50 and Certificate
Lesslie read excerpts from the winning essays and thanked teacher Eliabeth Fisher at Cerro Villa Middle School for having her students participate.
Third Category: Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

These four Jr students from Villa Park High attended this year's Camp RYLA in Idlewilde and briefly described their experience. Dan Cregg was in attendance and it was great to see him. Dan underwent a Stem Cell Transfer and is home recuperating and must be careful to avoid infection while nursing his new immune system. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Fourth Category: VPRC Educational Mini-Grants(Previously Awarded on March 11)

Fifth Category: Vocational Education Scholarships

Winners: Media Arts- Brett Drolet-
Graphic Arts- Brooklen Ashleigh
These awards will be presented at the Villa Park High Sr. Awards Assembly
Each recipeint will receive a $250 Scholarship and Certificate of Appreciation
Santiago Canyon College Scholarships will be presented to 4 returning students at the college
Yet to be determined- each recipient will get $500 toward tuition at Santiago Canyon College.
Interact Presidents Scholarship
Presented by Steven Pollack

Autumn Koch - President of Lutheran High Interact
Diane and Autumn were not present for the ceremony, but all recipients and the Interact
Boards will be honored at a dinner on May 22nd at Rockwells- 6 PM
To receive $250 Scholarship and Certificate of Appreciation
Steven thanked Daryl for all the help that Interact has provided to our club over the last year.
Sixth Category: Business of the Year
Presented by Coordinator Pam Dunn
Winner: The Honorable Bill MacAloney Mayor of Villa Park
For his generous donations of food to many of the events sponsored in and around Villa Park.
Award : $200 which will be donated to "Camp to Belong" and a certificate of appreciation
Seventh Category: "Above and Beyond Award"
Presented by President-Elect Greg Mills
Winner: Rick Barnett for his work with the Annual Villa Park Marine Thanksgiving Program
which currently brings 120 US Marines from Camp Pendleton to share Thanksgiving Day and Dinner with families in Villa Park.
Award: $100 and a certificate of appreciation
That concluded the award ceremony. Joe Brand thanked Linda Bartrom-Olsen, all the coordinators and presenters at today's ceremony.

Linda Bartrom- Olsen reminded everyone that Interact Award Dinner will take place on Saturday Evening 6 PM May 22nd at Rockwells- Please let Linda know if you intend to come.
Pam Dunn- distributed tickets for the Lobsterfest at the Yorba Linda Sunrise Rotary Club on Friday May 21st. Tickets are still available at the $75 per person price for the event.
Steve Kawa announced that so far the Harlem Ambassador Basketball Game has made a profit of $6,972.73. Jay Applebaum gave him an additional $75 and there are still some monies coming in for a profit of just over $7,000.

Bill Baker and Peter Jacobi had entries in the Villa Park High Car Show-
Bill was happy to announce his 1946 Cadillac won Best in Show
Blair Baker had her engagement party on Saturday
Lesslie Giacobbi added that Peter had to drive Bill's Cadillac home after the event and it drove like a truck.
Jay Applebaum announced that his daughter Nicole was named Spartan of the Year at Villa Park High
Bill Baker said he ran into Past District Governor Lane Calvert who attended the Harlem Ambassador Basketball in stead of the Governor's Ball at the District Conference and he had a great time
Bob Meyer got a contact from a worker in South County who donated 1150 DVDS for the troops and an additional 40 boxes of stuff for the troops.
Bob Kreisberg announced that he had his first meeting of Jr. Achievement at Cerro Villa Middle School with a class of 36 7th grade kids in the AVID Program. Next week he will have a class of 8th grade students and will start a program called "What Adults Do For Work" where he hopes to bring in 2 people of different professions to talk to the kids about their jobs.
Steven Pollack talked about his daughter Lauren's upcoming commencement this week at Cal State Channel Islands- Lauren will be the Commencement Speaker. Family members are coming in from far and wide to attend. Steven is a very proud papa.
Jane McDonald talked about the group that brought toys to the orphans in Romania. She represented our club and was honored for her/our efforts in that project.
Brian Nashattended/ hosted an Adalante Boys Conference last Saturday- this group encourages inner city boys to continue their education. It was held at the Outdoor Education Center in Irvine Park and their were some outstanding speakers.
Brian and Laurie have adopted a 21/2 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog
Jim Brodsky donated money to encourage more anniversaries- he and Cathy will be going to Mexico to do some Rooster Fish Fishing.
