Carnac The Rotarian Makes a Surprise Appearance
As Steven Pollack Takes the Podium
Steven Pollack stood in for President Greg Mills at today's meeting and did a masterful job.
Crowning the meeting with a blast from the past as he reprised his Carnac The Rotarian persona.
The answer he surmised by browsing at the sealed envelope and arching his eyebrows was "Sixteen Years" and the question was: " How many years does Pam Dunn hope to be Vice President of the Villa Park Rotary Club?"
That being said our meeting started with an invocation by the same Pam Dunn(A.K.A Villa Park's Rotary Queen) who as usual left us with a feel good moment. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Eric Senseand Steven Pollack covered for Bryan Nash by leading us in the Rotary Four Way Test. Our song was "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" in honor of Tuesday night's All-Star Game that was hosted by our own Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Not much of a game as it turned out; David Ortiz can hit, but he sure can't run.
Guests:
Jason Childs- Today's Speaker
Craig Alexander- long-time former Villa Park Rotarian and friend of the club.
Announcements:
Jane McDonald- has mail-in bags available for your old cell phones. By mailing in your phones credit cards will be generated so the soldiers overseas can call home. Contact Jane if you need a bag.
Jill Kuli- announced that the Rotary Club is sponsoring a shredding truck and you can bring up to 4 boxes of shreddable items/person. Date to be announced in August. Donations to the club will be accepted.
Linda Bartrom-Olsen showed us the jersey that we helped sponsor for the Villa Park Summer Football Camp. Kids from 3-13 attended and all got a jersey that said "No to Drugs, Yes to Football". The Coaches and team members from Villa Park's Football Program served as mentors and counselors for those attending.
Pam Dunn passed around thank you letters that the club has received in the last few weeks.
She also let us know that one of our Villa Park neighbors, Lorna Ross, is looking for people to help harvest her oranges. So all you would be pickers let Pam know if you can help. The date is some Saturday to be announced in August.

Speaker: Jason Childs
Jason is a native of Minnesota who went on to attend the University of North Dakota where he played football. He went on to be drafted by the San Francisco 49s, where he played on a number of winning teams and was later traded to the Seattle Seahawks. His NFL career lasted 6 seasons and was ended by a serious knee injury. He shared statistics about the injuries that are suffered by professional football players and how few kids make it to the pros.
Due to values that were instilled in him by his father he has gone on to have successful careers working at 3M, Telecom and most recently the Aerospace Industry.
His credo is that whatever you do, do it well.
He has been involved with the following charities:
Special Olympics
United Way
Personal visits to children's hospitals
MS Society- his father passed from MS
Safari Club- wildlife conservation
Politics -energy, education
Jason concluded by answering questions about his NFL experience.
He thoroughly enjoyed his NFL career, but liked playing for a winning team(49ers) better than a not so winning team(Seahawks) and took some razzing from his former 49er Teammates when the playoff season began. His favorite team is the Minnesota Vikings and he hopes Bret Favre comes back this season.
We learned a lot about Jason during his talk; his grandfather had been a slave; his father played a great role in making him the man he ultimately became and pushed him to get an education. He is grateful for his gifts and does what he can to give back to his community. He was a member of an elite football fraternity and treasures the memories he has of the game.
